In late August, students will enter the doors of St. Joseph Catholic School to begin the school’s 82nd year of
providing quality Catholic education to young people in the Manhattan area.  What started as a program for 40
students and 3 Sisters from the Order of St. Francis of Mary Immaculate, has blossomed into a program for 208
students with a full and part-time staff of 20.  The facility now includes a gymnasium, a computer lab equipped with
up-to-date hardware and software, a multi-purpose room for library, vocal music, band and art classes, and a
resource room where a ½ time special education teacher, and a ½ time resource teacher provides ancillary
services to students who may require small group or individual instruction.

The school provides instruction for first through eighth grades as well as a half day program for kindergarten and
pre-school programs for 3-year-olds and  4-year-olds.  Class size is held to a maximum of 25 students per grade
with a State of Illinois certified teacher.  Pre-school classes, kindergarten and 1st grade also have a classroom
assistant assigned to them to provide an excellent child to adult ratio.

Children receive instruction in all academic areas, as well as Religion, vocal music, art, physical education, band,
technology and tutoring services for children with special needs.  Instruction in the Catholic faith is a daily activity,
as is classroom prayers.  Students plan and attend weekly Mass.  They also have the opportunity during the school
year to pray the Rosary, the Stations of the Cross and to participate in Benediction and school-wide Advent and
Lenten meditations.

The school has received high academic results from the student body and graduates continue to experience great
academic success at various high schools they may attend.  Twice within the last three years, for example, the
Valedictorians at Providence Catholic High School have been graduates of St. Joseph Catholic School.

The teaching staff have teaching certificates from the Illinois Office of Education and half the staff have earned
advanced Master degrees.  Parents are considered partners in the educational process of their children.  The
school strives to help children develop in improving their physical, social and emotional skills.  Our motto  “St.
Joseph Catholic School  -   Where Education and Religion Thrive”  is indicative of our efforts to promote
knowledge and practice of our Catholic faith, along with a knowledge and application of academic information.
Parents make a considerable financial sacrifice to provide to their child a Catholic education – an investment in
mind and soul that is of great benefit to each child.
